Best way to hang bikes from garage ceiling?

I just hang the bike by its seat from one of the rafters - at least that is what I do with one of my
bikes. The other two are hung by the seat from hooks that are screwed into the rafters.

I like it, gets it pretty far up in the air, and makes an OKay work stand. However, I don't think I
would pay $50 for it ... my local Sports Authority had them on sale this past fall for $20, and then
for $5! If you look around I think you can find one for $20.

Wal Mart has some nice rubber coated storage hooks ... at least one of them is specifically for
bikes, although it is for attaching to a wall ( tinyurl.comyzapOpen ↗ ). I think it was only like
$4 at Wal Mart. That's the one I use for the hardtail that sits under / next to the FS that hangs
with the above device. Between those and a 2 bike floor stand for a city bike and road bike, 4 bikes
store neatly in a corner with about the same vertical footprint as a single bike on a kick stand.

You don't want to hang most disc brake systems and some forks upside down so you should hang it
from the rear wheel or the top. Those racks that hold the bike upright on the wall are probably the
best solution.

Oil?

My el-cheapo Manitou Blacks lost their damping recently. Pulled it apart, poured in some shock oil,
and they seem TB working again. But they definately weren't leaking and they *did* work at some
point in time.

Now that you've said what you said, I'm thinking that being hung by the front wheel let the oil
settle someplace where it was causing a problem...?

I believe it was Marzocchi that said that forks should be left upside-down every once in a while to
allow oil to flow to the top of the fork where it needs lubrication.

The only leak my Atom Bombs ever had in several years of service was
from hanging the bike upside down. I would recommend against the practice.

How high is the ceiling and can you hang the bike from the apex and run the car in underneath it ?

The old welsh airer used for hanging clothes on to dry could be tweaked for this. Theres a version
called the Sunny Wheel Bike Lift on www.parrot-online.com which you could copy. A frame with hooks
on, pulleys, and a rope to pull it up and to secure it sideways to a wall. Mike
