it;s more or less ok to drip chain lube on the back wheel rim.
I would go with "less OK" here. I avoid doing this, but then I don't consider glopping oil on a
dirty chain to be maintenance. Take the chain off to clean and lube.

actually i have a way to clean the chain, that i had not read about.
i don;t use oil on it, just silicon and teflon type things.
to clean it, i spray it with 409 or some car engine degreaser.
let it sit for a while.
then really blast it with a high pressure water hose.
100-125psi at least, through a concentrating nozzle.
put the hose right on it, trying to target the inside of the links. i kind of aim mostly into the
cassette but at the chain.
do this for a couple minutes, cranking the chain via the pedals, water blasting everywhere, then
shake and wipe dry.
then maybe some wd 40, then wipe the outside of the chain clean of that.
then some silicone and teflon, wipe outside again, then ready to go.
it seems to work, there is only about .3/16" wear on the one chain that i have exclusively used this
method on, at 2500 miles.
i ride a lot, so there is no question of sitting around rusting, after the water.
sometimes i will ride it a mile or two to get the water out, prior to official lubing.
