AN INTERVIEW WITH CARDIOLOGIST DEBRA R. JUDELSON ON THE BENEFITS OF NITRIC OXIDE FOR
CARDIOVASCULAR HEALTH
With researchers like Nobel Laureate Dr. Louis Ignarro working with Herbalife to develop
breakthrough new products such as Niteworks(tm), it's no wonder that physicians are increasingly
taking note of the benefits offered by Herbalife products.
One of them is Dr. Debra R. Judelson, a practicing cardiologist, internist and Director of the
Women's Heart Institute in Beverly Hills, California. Dr. Judelson recently took time out of her
busy schedule to talk with Herbalife's own Dr. Jamie McManus about the importance of Nitric Oxide
and its role in cardiovascular health. Here are some highlights:
MCMANUS: Tell us about Nitric Oxide and its importance in cardiovascular health.
JUDELSON: Nitric Oxide is a naturally occuring substance that your body makes that is essential for
normal blood-vessel function. It's also something that we in the medical profession have only
learned about in the last decade or so. It's fascinating because a lot of doctors still don't
understand what it does and how it can help your health.
MCMANUS: Give us your view on the L-Arginine/L-Citrulline combination in Niteworks(tm).
JUDELSON: Niteworks(tm) provides L-Arginine and L-Cirtrulline. Most people haven't heard of either
of these. They're amino acids--substances that your body makes--but you can also get them from
food or take them in a supplement. Your body takes L-Arginine and converts it into Nitric Oxide,
and the L-Citrulline helps recycle the L-Arginine to make more N.O. One problem we have with
Nitric Oxide is you can't take a pill of Nitric Oxide and have it work in the blood vessels. Your
body has to make it.
MCMANUS: You know Dr. Louis Ignarro, one of the leaders in cardiovascular research in Nitric
Oxide.Tell us what you know about his research, which allows us to bring enhanced Nitric-Oxide
production to the general public.
JUDELSON: The groundbreaking research that Dr. Ignarro did showed us that Nitric Oxide is the
signaling molecule that helps a blood vessel know that it should dilate. Normal blood vessels will
dilate when they're under stress, and since you need more blood flow to the heart muscle and the
rest of your body when you're under stress, that's a good thing. But if you have plaque or
cholesterol deposits in a blood vessel, it's not going to dilate as easily.
MCMANUS: The ability to product Nitric Oxide is reduced in that situation.
JUDELSON: Yes. What we've found is that if you can increase your Nitric-Oxide production, you can
increase the ability of the blood vessels to dilate even if you have some cholesterol deposits or if
your blood cholesterol level is high. What is really earth-shattering about this is that prior to
Dr. Ignarro's discovery, we cardiologists were sort of stuck when talking about heart disease. It
was either you're healthy and everything works right or you have heart disease and things don't work
right. This is an opportunity to have people actually improve their heart health. It means that we
have the potential now to have people learn how to be healthier about their heart, improve their
blood vessels and just try to make things work better.
