OT: Any good night life near the NYC Amtrak station?

Is this a serious question? In short, you really haven't had to worry
about random crime in the city for a bit. As long as you aren't
wearing a [censored] pack or a suit made of 100 dollar bills, you should be
safe. I

In terms of nightlife, there's not much nightlife right near Penn
Station. The nearby bars tend to be generic "Irish" bars and old man
dives. You could easily walk or take the subway a short distance and
have a fun time. It all depends what you're into: dive bar, club,
dance, live music, cheap? Whatever. Be more specific and maybe we
can offer a suggestion.

The Ginger Man is a short walk to the northeast.
East of 5th on 36th, I believe.

Dozens of taps, 2 beer engines and a fine selection of bottles.
In a recent survey, Beer Advocate mag listed it in its top 25 beer
bars.

Don't stand like a sheep waiting for a taxi in the official line on
7th ave.
The subways run from NYPenn (A, C, E or 1,2,3,9).
Pick up a $10 Metrocard and go somewhere interesting.
If you're after more than just a pint, head south to the Village.
The (new) Blind Tiger Ale House is worth a visit.
Too bad Kate doesn't work at the new location.

CB6 is a good place to go.
Great beer selection and isn't usually too crowded.
Hop an E train up to 53rd and Lex.

If you get stuck in NYPenn, there are worse places to be than "Tracks"
down in the LIRR side of things. Decent chowder. Sierra Nevada Pale
Ale on tap. If an airport had a bar in the basement, this is what it
would aspire to be.

If you're feeling particularly adventurous, head over to Brooklyn To
Mugs Ale House and a bunch of other beer bars. The only time I
ventured over there was for a Floyd fundraiser at the Brooklyn
Brewery. Wish I had checked that part of town out more when I was out
there.

Don't Panic.

As a matter of fact, people in New York City
are happy, out-going, and friendly. They keep
the tempo up, so when ordering in a lunch room
know what you want and speak up.

There's far more activity in Times Square and that would be my
suggestion. You will not be very far away from there at Penn Station.
Use the same safety precautions you would in any central business
district after dark.

I've always found NYC folk to be pleasant and friendly. Know what you
want to order, know where you are going in advance and try not to look
like a tourist. (Don't stand around looking at a map any more than you
have to.)

My favorite is early mornings in late spring or early fall in the
country when it is cool but not cold. The sky is lightening, but the sun
is not yet up. The birds are in full song, and not a hominid produced
sound is to be heard. Wonderful (literally).
