  1. winter is here. and the season's grease is turning to a less than fresh lube. dirt, cold thickening
with evap of the carrier over the year, built in obsolesence: in this instance a new year old
deore. The grease looks terrific-so green and bright- but yagotta cleanit sometime right? Some of the
deore's factory greasing is deep inside the unit. almost inaccessible?

Question: how to effectively grease the deore deray as part of the cold season relube, new bearings,
    check it out process?

How does the pro do it? Or better does the pro do it on his bike? I am considering loosening a
synthetic bike grease with solvent and dunking the cleaned unit then evaporating in a solar dryer
following with a wipe down of non-essential surfaces.

After wiping off dirt, lubricate the following points with a single drop of oil:
    1. Edge of each pulley-wheel dust cap
    2. Both ends of all four parallelogram pivots
    3. Mounting-bolt threads (best done with derailer removed)
    4. Adjusting-barrel threads
    5. Pinch mechanism threads. (cable attachment bolt)
If there is significant dirt on the derailer, take time to remove it from the frame and clean the areas around the hanger and mounting areas.

Wipe off all excess lubricants with a clean cloth.

The spring is the only area where Shimano applies the green grease I think you are referring to. Leave that area alone.
If all this makes sense, go ahead.
Most pros let their mechanic care for these details.

    Excess lubricant attracts dirt.

  3. thanks dave!! any idea what lube shimano uses on the pivots and all other points of wear? there's
nothing in there that's unseen or trick?? as in holds dirt and resists lubrication application then
    fails apart outsida Kamloops?

Hose it off, de-clag the jockey wheels and spray it with WD-40 or GT85. At least that's what we do
in countries where we have wet nasty winters with salt on the roads.

  5. when the time came to clean the deore deray there was no time to remove and dunk. Used a toothbrush
with paint thinner on the pivots. Tilted the bike up 90 degrees againts a wall then upside down
saddle off. Wet brush. gently and accurately pour the thinner dribble. the spring pivot could use a
testube bottle brush. that back pivot area takes some eyeballing and contortion dribbling to flush.
the unit is remarkable compared to the Sutours topline from the '80's. the pivots are tight in
there. amazing. $20. used CC Finish line on it after drying then CHO on the body(too remove excess
CCFL) where I laid strips of electrical tape 90 degrees to the body on the body then out to the
wheel side to cover the deray's inboard side. Then a strip horizontally across the body where the
name (cover ur nipples) gets covered covering both joints. finished withn one more inbound strip
near the back joint to form a cup up against the hanger. less dirt. less maintainence. less wear.
leslesles!! now for the ultrasonic bath and evaporator oven!!

An internal gear hub such as a Sachs or Sturmey Archer eliminates many of the issues that g. daniels
notes. I quickly tired of frozen deraillers, high maintenance, and expensive component replacement
resulting from riding a derailler equipped bike in the winter. I now have 30,000 miles on a 5 speed
Sturmey Archer hub after 12 years of daily commuting. Maintenance has consisted of a little oil to
the hub once every couple weeks, a new inexpensive chain each spring, and a couple cables.

As usual, you bring incoherent babble to the NG 😉

What's CC Finish? CHO? CCFL? Use only one prepositional phrase at a time. Finish your sentences
after about 15 words, then start a new one. It'll help us all because I'm sure you have some
    excellent stuff to say.

  8. Be careful...this one was nearly coherent! You wouldn't want that now, would you?

I'd be so afraid to get paint thinner near the painted frame. Why not use WD-40 to remove the crud?

    What's "contortion dribbling"?

Ah, there's some incoherency. That's nearly what I expect from you. However, the words and sentences
are constructed of coherent components; you ought to stop using real words again.

    And,

'CC Finish' and 'CCFL' are probably both 'Cross Country Finish Line', a proprietary chain lubricant.
'CHO' I can't help you with.

    Dear Simon,

Possibly CHO is a deep cleansing cream for those troubled by oily parts? Or a moisturizer for
derailleurs afflicted by dry skin? Perhaps even a cologne?

The electrical tape appears to have been intended to remove unsightly hairs growing from the drive
    train's exposed parts.

Gee, you'd think Gene's missives were pronouncements from Alan Greenspan, the way everyone tries to
parse snippets of meaning from them. Mr Daniels and Mr Greenspan each have uniquely opaque writing
styles. In both cases to a purpose that isn't at all clear to me. Maybe they choose their styles
_because_ I'm not supposed to understand them.

One has cautioned about "irrational exuberance" regarding stock market investments. The other has
provided a strategy for dealing with irrationally exuberant applications of lubricants. One's
writing is frequently about conservation of capital; the other's writing is noted for its marked
    conservation of capital letters.

You have hit on something, Andy. Without comment on Mr. Greenspan, I can say that Gene Daniels'
postings continue to entertain, amaze and baffle me, and others here too. I figure that since I am
at least partly a rationalist, there has got to be a few flakes of pepper amongst all that flyshit.

On the other hand, I slow down to gawk at car wrecks too.

  19. deray lube the short cut lube leaving the deray on the hanger gets the job done. more or less.
but the bushing on the deray/hanger bolt keeps quietly nagging everytime a glance goes its way.
grease the bushing once a year? is that enough? I was reminded that holding arag under the unit
and protecting the tire is essential. and the trick is to cultivate the local air compressor
