Cage spring gone?

Try pulling the chain so it pulls on the mech and see if the mech springs
back at all (or just pull the mech down and see if it springs back up).

If it's springy it may be attached wrong, if it's not springy I'd agree
with the broken spring conclusion.

Sadly, this didn't work. My mech - a SRAM SX5 or 5.0 or something -
rotates freely around the mounting bolt, so it seems any kind of twisting
is futile.

The chap in the LBS thinks it is indeed broken, so i'm going to get a new
one. Oh well.
