  1. My best friend (one of our elite swimmers), and my coach too think that I have a really good chance
to qualify for the FINA world games in June, at the rate I'm going. (35+ age group) I've only been
    swimming for 5 months!!!

    ***faint***

  2. Not to discourage, but did they tell you that a number of the events don't have a qualifying
    requirement?

    Qualifying times are at: fina.orgmastersnews riccione04 QTimes.html

There are qualifying times for *all* events this time, and they are harder than 2002 in
Christchurch. In that championships, there were no qualifying times for any 50m & 100m events and as
a comparison in the 400m free womens 40-44 (my age group) the 2002 time was 7:20, which I can make
easily, and is now 6:27, which I would not be able to make. In fact, I couldn't make any of the
qualifying times in any event in my age group.

I guess it reflects the increased number of competitors expected as the event is being staged in
Europe, trying to keep it to a manageable number by having harder qualifying times. I'm not sure how
they will implement the qualifying times. For 2002, you just had to state when & where you had swum
the time, though they never asked you to verify it and it didn't have to be in competition. But if
you swum over the time at the championships, you didn't get a time recorded.

  5. Thanks Liz. I hadn't realised that they'd changed things for this one. They've definitely toughened
the standards - this time I wouldn't qualify for any events in my age group.

  6. Yea, I heard something to that effect, but the excitement is to be able to qualify for those that
do. I'm not sure which is which. I looked up the qualifying times today for myself, and at-a-glance,
seems like all the events have qualifying times. I'm yet to read all the details. I'll be going to
Italy one way or another, either as a spectator, or to swim as well. Then I'll hop over to the other
side of Adriatic, and visit my mom and dad.

  8. I seem to have the best chance to qualify in the 200M and 400M freestyle. At the rate I've been
dropping time, seems like it might be possible.

Just went to the SCM regionals in Belmont Shores and did the following: 1500 - 27:45.98 (drop from
28:30.15) 800 - 14:36.71 - (I'll have to look up what I entered there the seeded time was incorrect,
I was seeded 2 minutes faster than I entered, I think it was a typo. I'm pretty sure I entered at
    15:02-something) 400 - 6:55.53 (drop from 8:02) 200 - 3:23.90 (drop from 3:41), and I'm told I did
3:12 in a relay at the end of a day 3, but that's unofficial. I think 2:55 is QT for FINA in 200
    free. 100 - 1:31.56 - (drop from 1:38.89) I'm *really* happy about this one! 50 - 41.52 - a drop
from 43.70, I was very surprized.

all time drops in just 2-3 weeks since the pierce college meet 🙂)) I'm right at 5 months of
    training now, starting from zero.

It would be interesting to know who on this newsgroup could swim the qualifying times. I'm closest
in the 50m & 200m free. Comparing my PB times against the qualifying times, I miss them by the
    following percentages: 50m free: 2.7% 100m free: 6.25% 200m free: 3.33% 400m free: 6.1% 50m back:
    6.81% 100m back: 6.79

(calculated as ((PB - Q)/Q) * 100 where PB is ... PB and Q is qualifying time).

Actually, those numbers are very interesting when I look at them! Seeming to imply that my
backstroke is comparatively as strong as my freestyle, which certainly doesn't seem to be the case
when I swim in those events. It may just be that the qualifying times for the free are relatively
harder, as more people swim it.

This could be a new scoring system - how far your PB is outside (or inside) the qualifying time in
    your age group.

Last time I asked the organisers about what constituted a "qualifying" swim and there didn't seem to
be anything official. According to them, FINA had not put any any prescription on the length of the
pool, or it having to be swum in an official meet of any sort. You just had to state where & when
    you swum it.

I swum mine in a 33m pool at training with a friend timing for me, but was well within the times so
it wouldn't have made much difference anyway.

So if you were close to the time, either SC or LC, and were confident you could go under it on the
day, I would say go for it. Your national masters organisation may hev more information.

    Liz D

  11. My times for SCM are considerably faster than my LCM times, especially in breaststroke (because the
turns in breaststroke are much much faster than the swim), which is my strongest stroke.

Using my SCM times over the past year or so I get:

    50 free 4.0% 100 free 9.1% 200 free 8.1% 50 breast 1.3% 100 breast 1.4% 200 breast 1.6% 50 fly 9.4%
    100 fly 18.1% 200 fly 9.8%

When I am fit, I am capable of swimming the breaststroke qualifying times (but only just). As you
can see, I'm not a freestyler.

I haven't swum any LCM for quite some time even though I train in a LCM pool, but based upon my
historical equivalent times for LCM and SCM, I'd have to add another 4% to my breaststroke ratio to
the qualifying times if I used LCM qualifying times.

be sure to use time conversion between SCM and LCM, cause the times aren't the same in those two.
    Qualifying times are LCM.

USMS and some LMSC, and out team websoite had the time converter on the website.
www.mastersmvnswim.org go to the meet info pages.

  13. No, qualifying times don't *have* to be long course, but your times must qualify after converting
them to long course. So if you swam SCY, and got an pfficial time, it needs to be converted to LCM
time before it qualifies. As a rule of thimb, if I remember correctly, you want to add about 10
seconds to the SCY time to get to ballpark of the LCM time.

A meter is 10% further than a yard, so you would need to add 10% to a short course yards

I have qualifying times in 50m, 100m and 200m free, and 50m and 100m fly, all inside 4-6% of the
qualifying time in my age group. I have not competed in other events. I am a distance swimmer
though, enjoying ocean races from 1 to 10 miles.

kind of organized or scientific coaching or supervision. I was just winging it, much like the rest
of us kids growing up on the coast did. I never had any idea how fast I would swim, never been
timed, never knew much about swimming strokes or techniques. I'd just 'feel' my way through things.
The only thing that I timed was how long I can stay under water, cause when you're trying to catch
fish for dinner, that kind of counts. and as kids living by the water, that's what we did for fun.
So, you tell me, is that what you would consider "the foundation of a swimmer who did surface diving
    for eight years?"

So, I have a lot of unofficial experience of just being in and around water, and perhaps a drop of
talent, but had no idea how much that counts, so from that point of view, I started from zero.
Meaning, was about 40 pounds overweight, resting heart rate at about 80, and never have swam with
anything organized before. I believe I have said more than once I was born on the mediterranean
coast, and spent a lot of time playing in water as a kid. So you tell me, how do you quantify that?

Also, even though I could stay under water that long, I was never in a really good shape as a kid,
or did any other athletic kind of sports, so I don't have previous athletic experience, except some
fitness and speedskating (rollerblade) related training in my mid 20's. I had competed in another
sport as a kid, and had evenstarted training with the olympic team back home the year that I came to
the US (and dropped the training because of it), but it's not exactly considered an 'athletic' type
of sport, so I have experience with competition in general.

So, what else would you like to to know, that is confusing you? (as if that;'s waht you really
want.. hehe) Tell me, what would you consider starting from 0? If you didn't understand what I
considered 0, you should have asked back then.

Right now, it looks like you're huffy, amid a lame attempt to find a contradiction in something I've
said. Makes me wonder whatr's bugging you, and exactly how is my swimming experience or lack thereof
(whichever way you choose to look at it) relevant to it??? actually, I think I know. it looks to me
like You just hate not being right, and when straight out dialogue fails, you try to discredit the
other side, so you'd look right. One of the oldest tricks in a book. Why is that? Is Martin not
likeable if he's not alweays right? Does he feel like failure if he's not always right?

Well, my pal, I'm not into playing those kinds of games. I tell it like it is. If you think you're
right, and you're secure with that knowledge, there's absolutely no need to prove to you, me or
anyone else that you're right. You seem to have such a need to be right all the time, I see other
people are noticing, you know, by saying "why do you act like you're the only one that knows
anything..." You should be a politician, or an attorney.

-DaKitty [who thinks that Martin's wife, if he has one, gets to tride a huffy pretty often :P]

It *is* a contradiction in what you said. And now you have written a long, long denial.

It's an interesting passtime to get an insight in your peculiar thought process.

    Thank you kindly for sharing.

No, qualifying times don't *have* to be long course, but your times must qualify after
converting them to long course. So if you swam SCY, and got an pfficial time, it needs to be
    converted

LCM time before it qualifies. As a rule of thimb, if I remember correctly, you want to add about
10 seconds to the SCY time to get to ballpark of the LCM time.

A meter is 10% further than a yard, so you would need to add 10%

a short course yards time. However do to fewer turns in long course 12% seems to work better. Some
people add 10% plus a certain amount for each turn.

yea... when I want to be that precise, I use the offical converting calculator that many swim
websites have including our team website.
