I have a few PowerTaps and a SRM, and I used to have a Polar with the Power option.

The current issue of Bicycling magazine has a section on training with power including comparison which is pretty accurate compared to what you hear around here.
I have used the Polar Power Kit, and found it to be more quirky and problematic to the point that I got tired of trying to coax it into funtioning properly so that I got my training data. That was really disappointing because I like everything else about using Polar, and their ride journal/data software is really great.
I am testing a PowerTap Pro at the moment. I really like it. The power data seems to be a lot more reliable and accurate. The Powerlink software that it comes with leaves a whole lot to be desired though. The current Windows beta version that you can download is prone to freezes and doesn't appear to interface Java and XP SP2 properly. I have been using cyclingpeaks software and find it to be a whole lot better fit for what I am looking for after using Polar's journal and ride data software. But that is more of a personal thing.
As for training with power, I love it. I can do a whole lot better job of dialing in my workouts now, especially in terms of eliminating garbage miles and sloppy technique.
Hope this helps, and good luck! 😉
