Power Crank?

  1. Hello From Baltimore! Has anyone seen anything on a new invention that gives the effect of a longer
    crank length on the power stroke of the peddle revolution and changes it to a short crank length on
    the less powerful toe lift side? I've heard a rumor, if it is true it will benefit bent riders more
    than anyone, we do not use standing up to help on hills, just pure muscle. It would really help me
    as I just am not able to keep a high cadence. Any news is wanted! Stacey

    I'm getting the impression you're confusing Rotorcranks[1] with the outdated Biopace chain-rings
    from Shimano. Please feel free to spend a lot of money in technical features if you intend so, but
    none of the above will substitute proper spinning. In fact, Biopace rings make it harder to spin,
    they are more appropriate for a slower cadence.

    Fundamentally I'd say if you can't keep a high cadence...

    - your gear is to high
    - your muscles are not yet adapted for spinning

    So gear down and try to pedal with less resistance as smooth as possible. Clipless pedals surely
    help, they are recommended on recumbents anyway.

    Don't give up to soon! Your leg muscles need time to develop the required strength, endurance and
    coordination, think in months or years, not in days or weeks.

    One-legged turns will help to develop the feeling for timing and motion, try it first on
    slight declines.

    Did I already mention you need patience for learning to spin? ;-)

    Looking at Lance in TV probably will help also. Think spinning, keep training.

    There is a product called PowerCranks.

    That dealer sells both.

    Neither changes the effective arm length.

    I’ve seen several patents that disclose varying the length of the crank arm, but not seen any crank products out there.

    Note that easy crank gives more power when the pedals are within 45 degrees of level and less when more than 45 degrees from level. This is results in more peak torque with pedals near level and and less minimum torque with the pedals near vertical, extended dead spot. All this is approximately 90 degrees out of phase with RotorCranks and Biopace and this arrangement when tried with oval rings oriented for more peak peak historically increases knee problems.

    Easy crank says the angle is adjustable, so maybe you could change the orientation.

  13. The new invention you are referring to is Luca Motion by Sascher. This elliptical pedalling motion has an effective crank length of 125mm at top and bottom of stroke and an effective crank length of 250mm at the front and back of the stroke. This creates greater power with less fatigue do to reduced knee flex. You may find more information at LucaBike.com

    I was under the impression Lucabike's crank was only available on their bike. Are they selling the crank seperately?

    Sascher, are you the manufacturer?

    BTW, as you can see if you're following the Powercrank thread over on RBR, it might be better to discuss this crank in a thread with with a different title-else we'll likely be attracting flaming posts (in a few weeks the helmet thread may be dwarfed).

    This resembles the Kingsbury K-Drive, which they only made for their own racing bents. This
    elliptical drive reduced the aero drag enough to more than compensate for the increased mechanical
    drag. Any possibility of this crank being available separately in a shorter length (170mm front and
    back, 40-50mm top and bottom) ?
