  1. Hi, Unfortunatly I had a crash a few weeks ago. Today I had a cast put on my right hand to help my broken thumb heal.
Can anyone suggest if training on the turbo is ok? The obvious concern is sweat and bacteria inside the cast. I believe you can dry out cast with a hair dryer after training?

  2. I'm sure someone will eventually respond that they've ridden 100 miles through the backwoods of the Rocky Mountains with a cast on and they're no worse for the experience.

Just because you can doesn't mean you should though.

Medical questions are best left answered by a doctor or nurse...

  3. Ask your doctor. He/She's the one that's qualified to answer that question. They've heard such questions a lot.

  4. When a had a broken wrist last year I had a removable molded cast on my hand, which allowed me to wash and air out my skin after riding indoors. Ask your Dr. about that option.

  5. Removable cast is your best option.

2 years ago I went to a winter training camp. One of the guys broke his wrist the day before. He rode ~70mi with us the next day, then cut it off himself for a 105mi ride the following day. Most of the ride was done one handed, including some ridiculously steep climbs and descents.

Yes, you can do it. No, it's not recommended.

  6. Your training camp ride leaders actually let a guy ride one-handed in a group? On steep descents? Apparently he avoided crashing and taking out the rest of you, but I can't imagine anything more dangerous than trying to brake from speed downhill with one hand on the handlebars. The guy sounds like the kind of high-risk idiot I avoid on group rides.

Who said a training camp needed to be organized by some leaders? It was a, "lets stay at a friends house, invite a bunch of friends in the area, and take a week off work to put in huge miles" training camp.
