I used to bike alot in high-school with my Specialized Fatboy Chromoly BMX(which was damn heavy for a bmx, something I regretted later). Back then I even liked that fixed gear BMX more for hills than mountain bikes, at least the mountain bikes I could afford and the few racing bikes I tried! But then again when I first got it I was like 5'1(1.55 m and I am 6'1 now btw) tall only; too short for most other bikes to fit me well. Also do not underestimate how bad Department store mountain bikes sucked especially in the mid 1990s that cost around around $100(because those are the type of mountain bike I had before the Specialized). Those Department store mountain bikes were so bad I remember you were more handicapped by changing gears on a hill than advantaged because you lose alot of momentum and energy while it tries to change gear for a few solid and burning minutes as you redouble your efforts to merely not roll backwards, which is why I liked the Fatboy more, back then.
Where I live in Morris County, New Jersey, there are many hills everywhere. So this is my primary concern when buying a bike. I hear one of the keys for hills is gear ratios, to have at least three chain rings in the front sprocket and a big sprocket with many chain rings in the back.
Here are the two hills right next to my house, I have to choose to go down one of them each time I will ride downtown, not to mention the hills that come after them.

Some other parameters:
-- I will be buying used(should be no problem, I live close enough to go to NYC if need be) probably from Craigslist or Ebay.
-- I would like to go some of the excellent local trails or even offroad.
-- I might start using the bike for local grocery shopping, going to the library, etc. instead of using the car for these stupid short trips.
I think those parameters, sort of rule out a pure road bike, because they greatly retain value(or maybe the Craigslisters just list them for more) and I would not be able explore the many trails in my county.
Here are some questions I have:
-- I am not sure what type of bike to get?
-- Can I retrofit a rear rack on any bike?
-- Even assuming road bikes are quite better at climbing hills, would a more expensive mountain bike be better than a lesser valued road bike (since used mountain bikes tend to lose alot more value than the road)?
-- Are disc brakes worth it, or just a gimmick, because when I was young I was more reckless, but honestly I feel trepidation thinking about riding down all these steep and vast hills in my area? When I was young I over-estimated drivers, now that I drive myself, I know that drivers do not expect to see bikers.
-- Is using a bikepedia.com a good measuring tool of a how good a given bike is, by trying to found how much it sold for when new? Ex. A bike that sold for $800 new in 2006 should be better than one that sold for $500 around the same period.
