Hi there all, brand new to the forums and have only been riding for about 2 weeks.
I recently purchased a trek 7.2fx, some Shimano SPD (A530) pedals along with some Shimano RO86L shoes and some other misc safety gear. (Front and rear flashers, reflective straps, helmet and "rear view mirror, helmet attachment). I have done a few 5 mile rides in the past 2 weeks and a 15 mile ride yesterday (which felt amazing).
A bit about me and what advice I need.. I was in the USMC for 5 years, did 3 tours and incurred injuries on my 3rd tour which caused for artificial hip, knee and neck injury.
These injuries made me unable to run which I had always enjoyed (did several marathons etc and had a life goal of doing an Ironman).
Due to these events I put on a large amount of weight (went from 180 and very lean to 225 and not so lean at all). I can't run because its to high impact so I started cycling. I realize an Ironman can't happen (at least a normal one, I plan to do one still but doing the mileage of running on an elliptical... not in a rush I know I need to work up to this and its a long road).
I am just a bit lost at where to start, how I can get into a good safe training regiment, but really have no idea where to start with cycling. I have been reading over the boards the last few weeks and have some general ideas, obviously as the Dr says, if it hurts, then stop. Injuring myself further is my biggest fear and I want to work into this nice and slow to prevent that (despite my nature of jumping in quick and working my body to its limit).
So I guess after all that what I'm looking for advice on is where to start, I did as I said several 5 miles in the past few weeks and a 15 mile yesterday (took a bit over an hour). I'm not concerned with loosing weight as my diet as good but I need to implement the exercise portion, and am mainly looking to improve strength and endurance (I know I will lose the weight with this).
Any tips, ideas or advice will be extremely appreciated.
