1. Hello all

Hope some can help me and my wife out.
We have just started to ride bikes, for fun, relaxing and also for getting fit.

The first bikes we did get, was and still is rubbish. Breaks not working, gear problems and so one.
But, it made us want new bikes of better quality.

But, what to buy?
We are only riding on paved roads. Not using the bikes for shopping or commuting to work.

What kind of bike is best? A racer? Hybrid?
What to look for when buying a new bike?

All help is good.

Thanks all

It would be good to know just a little bit more about how you think you will ride these in the future (sometimes hard to know). If you think you'd want to ride an hour or less at a time, at a leisurely to brisk pace, then a hybrid/comfort would probably be fine. If you are really focused on riding hard for fitness or wanting to go on group rides with your local bike club, then perhaps a road bike would be a better choice.

3. Thanks for the reply and help.
Well, I am not into riding races, yet, what we like to ride for comfort, fun and also for getting fit.
So, guess it leaves us with a hybrid bike?
The comfort on a road bike is less, maybe making it uncomfortable for us and the need we have?

4. you can accomplish a lot with a hybrid. upright position is typically more comfortable, but you can change handlebars for a more agressive mountain bike type stance if you want. I've ridden all three and regularly ride 25 miles at a time on my hybrid. It simply works for me. Everyone is different in what feels more comfortable.

Hybrids should also then put you on 700c tires, which are larger, more comfortable to ride on, etc. Plenty of tread patterns to choose from, so should you move to light trail riding or crushed limestone paths you should be able to make that transition.

My preference is to pick up decent bikes for low $ on CraigsList. My local bike mechanic does work for cheap and is good at it. So as long as the bike is pretty solid (brakes and drivetrain are good) I am good.

Most of all, ride some different styles of bike - road, comfort, hybrid, mountain - and see what feels best. Once you decide and buy one, then get a good tune up and bike fitting. And then enjoy the ride!

5. Thanks for helping me.

So, yes, I will get a new hybrid bike.
When keeping price in mind, are a bike for around 6-800$ a good buy?

I don't know on new ones. I have a Trek 7300 from 2001 that I purchased this year. Paid $80 for it then put new wheels & tires on it and a new stem. Very solid bike that I am riding 4+ times a week at 100+ miles a week and have less than $250 in it.

I bought a road bike (new) online last fall and it never felt right. Even after a fitting. Not the bike's fault, but I then sold it and have had good luck with CL - couple of mountain bikes, this hybrid, etc. It means my son and I can have decent mtn bikes to ride trails with (and around the neighborhood) and I can have a very decent hybrid to stay healthy on.

7. Hello and thanks for the help

Well, I was just going to ask about used bikes.
Will go to a dealer and look at some used bikes, guess I can find a good one, for a lower price, to start with.

I think you should have a look at " Bianchi Camaleonte 2 (Disc) - 2010" its quite near the range you have though of. Or else you can check out some more Hybrid....Road as well as MTb's on "track and trail" !

9. Lots of good hybrids at that price. The Trek 7.2 FX is one ive been looking at and seems like it could be a cool hybrid. I looked at the Giant Cypress also, but I didnt like the fork and seat suspension. However if you're interested in suspension maybe give it a try. Finally the Kona Dew Plus would be worth looking at.

All 3 of those bikes are built to be incredibly versatile from what ive seen.
