Beginner's perspective returning to tell another tale. The Ladera Ranch Grand Prix Crit race (Ladera Ranch Grand Prix) was my most difficult. It's about a 0.7 mile loop with two long uphill stretches, two short (one is very short) down hill straights. The climb isn't severe, but it is certainly noticeable. The time is 25 minutes.
7:00 am start time. About 30 riders Cat 5. The initial loop was a little slower thankfully as we learn the course. No pre-riding the course was allowed. Those in front had a definite advantage. The turns are semi-sharp, not bad, but extremely narrow when in a pack. And this pack was a huge cluster. I had to break at every turn and accelerate hard. I'm pretty sure I blew up early. I had to withdraw at about at about 18 minutes as I fell to far behind. I actually fell off the main group by the 2nd loop. I got on the wheel of some trailing riders, about 4 of us. Anyhow, I fell off that group on the climb after turn 3 and got in one more lap before being asked to exit, about 7 laps I think.
The shape of the course from overhead (looked at a map later) is like a cone with a circular connector at the top and bottom. And instead of a circular pattern, the apex connector actually orients the same direction as the top one. The Race begins at the center of the top circular connector and rides East. The first turn is at an angle of about 85 - 90 degrees into a downhill straight. The straight continues down and turn #2 is an angle 60-70 degrees. This small curved connector is also downhill and quickly hits turn #3 also about 60 degrees. Now the straight climbs uphill. Turn #4 is about 80-90 degrees and the curve connector is uphill, the longest of the distances.
Very frustrated with myself this time. I believe I ax'd myself with poor preparation. I rode 34 miles the previous day with the cycling group. There was one long hill in that ride and I blew up on it on purpose in the attempt to find my max heart rate. (I achieved a 188 for what it is worth). I drank my recovery drink and wore light compression stockings (calf high) for the remainder of the day and night. However I still felt fatigue set in early. Not to mention I ate a whole package of macaroni and cheese (I can't explain this one very well) for a late dinner and only got 5 hours of sleep.
The course was difficult and the riders were very good. I'm tired of being out of my league though. I'm ready to step it up, but these physiological gains are slow to arrive. I've lost over 10 lbs since I started off a frame of 5'9" at 178 lbs now.
At this point, I could use a few helpful words to give me an idea of when this training puts me in a more competitive state. I'm not giving up, but today's race made me angry at myself. Thanks.
