  1. HI Guys,
I recently bought a fairly decent entry level roadbike to start out on. I would like to start riding in road races and crits that are held on weekends in my town.
I'm not that sure what sort of training to do though. I have a fairly good fitness level (12 on the beep test) and can easily ride 50km.

I am a student so can only ride for about 1 hour after school on weeknights but can go for long rides on weekends.

So.......what I would like help on is how long and how often to ride
    and
how to build up muscle on my chicken legs
    and
nutrition. What sort of snacks and lunches i could eat.

    Thanks for all your help.

    Tom

  2. Welcome.

All I can say, to save everyone from constant repetition is just read through this : http://www.cyclingforums.com/cycling-training/314849-its-killing-me-but.html That's for your training.

And as far as putting muscle on, read through this : http://www.cyclingforums.com/cycling-training/475817-wieght-training-cycling.html

For you nutrition, read through this : http://www.cyclingforums.com/health-nutrition-supplements/441083-best-legal-supplements-cyclists.html

Just do a little reading around first, and see that the answers you're looking for are already staring you in the face.

    Good luck.

  3. Go to your local bike store and ask for bicycle clubs in your area. Ask for racing and or touring clubs. If LBS is no good then look on the web. Yes, you may have to drive to meet the club members but what you gain will be well worth the drive (if need be)
Remember you are just starting out.

  4. Not sure what you want to accomplish so I'm going to assume at some point you want to accomplish a century ride. If that is your goal, here is a web site that can help train you for that: Training for a Century Ride

You can change the schedule if the first week, note the 30 miles on Saturday, is too tough. You simply add two weeks in the beginning and start out with Monday doing 2 miles, Tue 5 miles, Wed 8 miles, Fri 6 miles, Sat 18 miles, Sun 5 miles; then the second week increase your mileage to Mon 4 miles, Tue 8, Wed 10, Fri 5, Sat 24, Sun 3. Then follow the schedule starting with week 1 for the third week. Personally I would start out slower even though I know you can ride 31 miles (50k). Why you scream? Because you reduce your chances of hurting a muscle and getting depressed by starting out slowly on a program then take about 2 weeks to work up to where you can ride now then surpass it.

  5. Thanks for all the help guys. It is much appreciated!
