I bought my oldest who is now 10 a Bianchi Yard 22" about 3 years ago, which I have been very happy with, now my second eldest who has just turned 7 needs a new bike, My first choice is the Bianchi Yard 20" in pink (this his her colour), but I'm curious what other members could advise?
But! I have a spec to go by, it should be along the lines as the Bianchi, it costs around £220 ($338), it should have mud guards, full chain guard, 10+ gears, Pannier Rack, Also ideally it will come with lights (dynamo if possible) bell, the style should be a sit-up and beg or similar to the Bianchi.
