    Regarding the following quote -

"1965 Senator Edward Long holds U.S. Senate hearings where Dr. Herbert
Ley, FDA Commissioner testifies that the FDA "protects" the big drug
companies and are subsequently rewarded, and using the government's
police powers they attack those who threaten the big drug companies."

This quote has been proved to be incorrect because Herbert Ley was FDA
Commissioner from 1968-9 and in 1965 he wasn't commissioner. Also
    where did this quote originate.
Think I might have the answer to this one.

The San Francisco Chronicle seems to be when this quote was made,
right after Herbert Ley left the FDA as commissioner. He left in
December and the comment was made in January 1970. But how does the
"1965 Senator Edward Long" bit come from?

An excerpt from the following article has these two unrelated quotes
running concurrently. It could have been copied and edited together by
    mistake.

WOULD YOU BUY A USED CAR FROM FDA? DISTORTING THE "PURE FOOD" (AND
OTHER) LAWS SINCE 1906 by Maureen K. Salaman & Jonathan V. Wright,
    M.D.

"If the Food and Drug Administration would spend a little less time
and effort on small manufacturers of vitamins and milk substitutes and
a little more on the large manufacturers of...dangerous drugs...the
public would be better served." -Senator Edward V. Long, 1965 hearing
of the Senate Subcommitt on Adminsitrative Practice and Procedure.

"People think the FDA is protecting them--it isn't. What the FDA is
doing and what people think it's doing are as different as night and
day." Dr. Herbert Ley, Commissioner of the FDA, _San Francisco
    Chronicle_, January 2, 1970

  4. The FDA is involved in all sorts of things that you would never think of. I personally know an officer in the FDA that boards cargo ships in NYC looking for "tainted" goods. They dont have enough manpower to check every ship in NY harbor everyday so they rely on "tips" from other agencies. Recently they busted a Chinese vessel for having thousands of jars of garlic powder. They were illegal because they were "cut" with 30% corn starch. Same thing drug dealers do with heroin or coke. It increases the bottom line. And of course its not printed on the label!
