Doctor Sentenced For Diluting Flu Shots Man Says He Used Sugar Water To Dilute Bottles Of
Flu Vaccine

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- A former doctor who admitted diluting flu shots to stretch his dwindling supply was
sentenced Wednesday to a year of probation and fined $5,000.
Marvin Galler, 47, a former resident of suburban Buffalo now living in Boca Raton, Fla., pleaded
guilty in July to adulterating a drug with intent to mislead.
Galler said he used sugar water to dilute an unspecified number of bottles of flu vaccine in
November 2001 as his supplies were running low. Between 10 and 50 patients were then vaccinated with
the weaker dose, assistant U.S. Attorney John Rogowski said.
At the time, Galler was practicing medicine at Amherst Cardiology and Internal Medicine in
Williamsville. Authorities began investigating when employees of the practice noticed the vaccine
supply was holding steady, even as they vaccinated numerous patients.
Patients who received the watered-down shots were notified by letter.
Galler surrendered his medical license after his arrest.
