There's a Hyundai model out there with a front fascia that looks just like a Mercedes. If you're driving towards it in traffic, no way can you tell it's not a Merc.

(Still, I've always wondered, surely the owner can't fool himself can he?)

Unlike the Benz, I believe most Italian bikes are actually built in Asia. I mean, those 'Chinarellos' may well have been made at the same factory after hours, no? Isn't that sort of what Giant did on a large scale? Maybe that's how we roll in the 21st century (the Canal Street way!)

My grandparents had a green '77 Granada with the white vinyl top. Totaled when they went head-on with a truck (not their fault) in about '85-'86 or so. Both of them were a little banged up, but fine. They replaced it with a Tempo...Grandpa wanted a Taurus, but he thought they cost too much.

I hope you watched the one where the Mercedes owner/actor tries to get in and drive away in the Granada owner's/other actor's car. Google up "rich Corinthian leather" for another faux farsical bit of deliberate and misleading advertising.

My Eyetalian Stallion never spent a day in Italy. It was dropped shipped to Utah straight from the People's Republic of China's Bicycle Factory Number 386. As stated so truthfully above...most carbon does come from Asia.

Ever looked at the interior quality of a fake Gucci sold on Canal street? Loose threads, misaligned seams, a second rate zipper that stuck after 5 minutes.

What could possibly go wrong descending at 50mph+ on a bike that comes with opaque QC and zero warranty? It's certainly got to be at least as safe as the pet food coming out of the same district.

Nothing generally wrong with "made in China" (my Cinelli for instance), but the older I get the more I appreciate the sentiment "you get what you pay for".

My modest yet highly loved Bianchi Via Nirone Anniversary Edition. Alu with carbon forks front and back. Rides like a Rolls Royce, only not so sluggish. Not the best pic, dodgy effort from Velodrome Regents Park recently.

Recommended strategy... buy it, loose the receipt and have it up on the stand when she gets back from wherever she goes. She'll get mad, tell her it's going back in the morning, but then bring her breakfast in bed. While she's basking in her queenly glow, hustle downstairs, throw on the bibs and hit the road. It won't be pretty when you get home but the bike will be yours.
