more XC, i weigh 175 lbs., i mostly do EPIC rides (wtf is hucking) with some stopping to play
around, when i say epic i mean like going out for 7 hours and only taking like maybe an hour worth
of breaks total (30 miles or so), im looking at spending around 500 ish

did 20 miles today in less that 1-1/2 hours but then there was only 1450 feet of climbing involved.

Be careful with that. There are two kinds of people posting on mtbr: idiots that had a bad
experience and want to blast something, and idiots that just spent a [censored] of money and want to
gush about their purchase. Usually on mtbr, failures result from poor application/installation, and
gushing comes from people who don't really ride.

The OP is looking for FS frames at a $500 pricepoint - that's not a lot of kickass options...and middle-of-the-
road stuff is never favorably looked at on mtbr.

You might get a vague idea of what each frame brings to the table, but it's a lot of "I bought it,
so it must be good" kind of commentary. Not all, but you sure have to wade through a lot of "yea,

For a FS frame, that's gonna get you low-end. Unless you try and score a deral off eBay - but you
really have to keep your wits about you in order not to get stuck with somebody else's thrashed POS
that they couldn't get warranteed.

Figure $800-1000 for a decent new frame. Now, if you believe some of the rags, Jamis might have a
workable solution for someone easy on equipment. But I wouldn't. XC means you'll be easy on the
thing, but it's nice to have a quality frame to start with, so that if you do find yourself pushing
it, that little voice won't say "hey, can this frame take it? Did I pay up my health insurance?"

You can probably find a Marin TARA frame for near $700. Look around. Good quality, rides nicely,
even for a single-pivot. Beefy, which means a little more weight. But you're not a weight weeny,
are you? 😉

Yeah. People that spend a lot of money on a piece of equipment tend to overrate it in a review.
However with that in mind I try to find the negative reviews because they can often be trusted. That
way I can sometimes learn what to stay away from.

With some of the deals on closeouts it might be cheaper to buy a lowend bike and scrap the
components. For example, you can get a nice little GT I-drive for $550 from PerformanceBike. Heck,
thrash it around a bit before upgrading. Another choice: K2 Razorback frames are for sale on Ebay
for $300...if you can find your size. The Weyless frames at Supergo start at $500....less when they
have the occasional sale or closeout. $600 will get you one with a nice 5th Element shock.

Wouldn't call the Razorback or I-drive, cheap designs. K2 Razorback team bike has a good rep. I-
drives climb like mountain goats...got one myself. These bikes were raced in "their day" whick
wasn't that long ago. Both are still being sold as new models (though this years Razorback has more
webbing in the headset area and I don't know if GT still makes a highend team version.)

As far as where they are made and the quality....this issue has been hashed and rehashed. There are
tons of expensive bikes being welded, in overseas, right beside these puppies.

These are NOT cheap department store bikes.

You're kidding, right? That system is way complicated, and tough for a DIYer to maintain or fix. Not
only that, but I doubt that Pacific has the quality committment that you could count on.

Better to get a used quality bike that fits at your LBS.

Selecting a bike based primarily on price will net you a compromise that may or may not work out.
And if this guy is 10 miles from his car when the thing gives up, that would suck hard. I bet he'd
pay another couple hundred bucks not to be stranded 10 miles from his car. That's a long walk,
especially with a bike over your shoulder. 🙂

Considering that the 5th Element is a pretty high-end shock, that would imply that the frame is low-
end. You can dress up a pig, but it's still a pig. Hey, I know. My beater was a heavy steel frame
from the late '80s, and dressing it up with XT and Marzocchi only made it slightly less a pig. Skip
the house brands - because the only known quantity is the price. Giant, Specialized, Marin - good
brands, and worth the money spent.
