Dani Moreno has signed a two-year contract with Movistar, ending a run with Katusha the stretches back to 2011.
Moreno, 34, won la Flèche Wallonne in 2013, finished in the Vuelta a España’s top-10 overall four times and won three stages of the Spanish grand tour. The punchy climber proved he’s a threat across the long professional season with a second place finish at Il Lombardia just weeks ago.
Despite his own success, Moreno is expected to provide climbing support for Movistar’s pair of general classification favorites, Nairo Quintana and Alejandro Valverde. The role will be familiar following frequent calls to support Joaquim Rodríguez’s grand tour ambitions at Katusha.
Moreno turned pro with Relax in 2005 and bounced around teams including Caisse d’Epargne (2008 and 2009) and Omega-Pharma-Lotto (2010) before finally settling into half a decade at Katusha.
Moreno is Movistar’s fourth new signing, joining Carlos Betancur, Nelson Oliveira, and young Spaniard Jorge Arcas.
