Sinfully rich, this brownielike bar can be custom-tailored to individual tastes. In place of the
nuts, try toffee bits, coconut, peanut butter chips, chopped mints or dried cranberries. Or mix
several favorites together to equal 2 cups.
Fudge Indulgence Brownies
1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, plus more to prepare pan
2/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
3/2 cup packed brown sugar
4/2 teaspoon baking powder
5/2 teaspoon salt 2 cups plus 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour, divided 1 tablespoon water 4 eggs,
divided 7 ounces semisweet chocolate, chopped, or 1 1/4 cups chips 1 (14-ounce) can sweetened
condensed milk 2 cups chopped nuts
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Butter a 9-by-13-inch baking pan. Melt butter; let cool slightly. In a
large bowl, combine cocoa powder, brown sugar, baking powder, salt and 2 cups flour; set aside.
Whisk water and 3 eggs into butter; add to dry ingredients and stir well to combine. Press mixture
into pan. Bake 5 minutes. Meanwhile, stir chocolate into sweetened condensed milk in a microwave-
safe bowl. Microwave on high power for 1 minute; let stand a minute or two, then stir. If chocolate
is not completely melted, microwave 20 or 30 seconds more. Stir until melted and smooth. Slightly
beat remaining egg. Stir about 1/3 cup of the warm chocolate mixture into egg. Stir in remaining 1
tablespoon flour, then stir back into chocolate mixture.
Pour chocolate mixture over crust in pan; spread to cover evenly. Immediately sprinkle with nuts;
with the back of a spoon, press nuts firmly into chocolate layer. Return to oven; bake 20 minutes.
Let cool completely before cutting into bars.
Yield: 24 servings.
