    Nov. 12, 2003 -- The key to curing type 2 diabetes may be in our heads, or at least in the heads of
    mice. A new study shows that altering a single gene in the brains of obese mice bred to have type 2
    diabetes helped them completely normalize blood sugar levels.

    Researchers say that it's the first study to show that glucose control may be regulated by the
    brain. If further research confirms these results, it could open a whole new approach to treating
    type 2 diabetes.

    People with type 2 diabetes are unable to regulate their blood sugar (glucose) levels normally
    because their bodies have become resistant to insulin, which is the hormone responsible for
    controlling glucose in the blood.

    Researchers say that obesity is thought to lead to decreased insulin sensitivity and then to type 2
    diabetes. But this study suggests that obesity and type 2 diabetes may both be caused by the same
    genetic defect in the brain.

    Brain Gene Provides Glucose Control

    In the study, published in the November issue of Diabetes, researchers looked at the effect of
    manipulating a gene in the brain known as POMC in mice bred to be obese with type 2 diabetes.

    Previous studies have shown that POMC production is reduced in the brains of obese and diabetic
    mice. People with mutations in this gene are also obese and diabetic. But because many genes are
    implicated in obesity and diabetes, it's not clear which genes, if any, play a role in regulating
    glucose levels.

    The study showed that when the activity of POMC was increased through genetic engineering, the mice
    reduced their food intake slightly and lost some weight.

    "But the surprising part was that the effect on glucose regulation was not partial," says researcher
    Charles V. Mobbs, PhD, assistant professor at the Fishberg Neurobiology of Aging Laboratories at the
    Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City, in a news release. "Even though these mice remained
    obese, their glucose levels were completely normal."

    Those findings showed that the dramatic improvement in glucose control and regulation was not
    related to the weight loss.

    New Direction for Diabetes Research

    Mobbs says these new results suggest this perception of a cause-and-effect relationship between
    obesity and glucose control might sometimes be wrong.

    "It appears that both conditions can be caused by the same defects, impairments in the production,
    processing, or responsiveness to POMC gene products," says Mobbs.

    Mobbs says it's still too soon to rule out a role of obesity in glucose regulation, but drugs that
    mimic the effects of the POMC gene may eventually be useful for people who developed diabetes due to
    aging or as the result of damage to the hypothalamus, which might affect the body's own POMC
    synthesis.

    He says drugs that mimic POMC are already being studied for the treatment of obesity, but it may
    turn out that these drugs will be even more effective in treating type 2 diabetes.

    But until those drugs are available, he says diet and exercise are the best way to control glucose
    levels and type 2 diabetes.

  4. Thats funny......I once had an Endo that told me all my symptoms of T1 was
    in my head.....needless to say.....he was put on the [censored] list never to be
    seen again. I try and spread the word around.and think I have been
    successful at turning a few victims away from him.....I just wish I could
    have put him in my shoes for just one day..........T1 for 23 years

  6. On any given day, someone, somewhere will quote something to bolster an argument. There is
    dissension amongst the most intelligent folks in medicine, so why should this be any different?
    Another study would "prove" something totally opposite to your cite. Sorry. That's just the way it
    is, Jen. Don't shoot the messenger. Try not to be taken in. My first couple of days after finding
    this NG, I posted a message about something I read in a professional publication regarding diabetes.
    I took issue with the "experts". Just because something is published doesn't make it so. To think
    otherwise is just naive. Again, I'm sorry, but that IS the case. Not that I know more than anyone
    else. I know I know less than many other folks, but by the same token I know enough to not jump on
    every bandwagon of "knowledge" that comes trudging down the pike.

    I do not understand why there was so much opposition to your article. Is = it because it was from
    the brain that the gene was modified? Would they have= been so opposed if the researchers would have
    modified the same gene taken fro= m one cell in the pancreas? Is it because they do not realize how
    much research= and studies are done in this area of science? Since our genes are all mapped = now,
    it is one of the most progressive fields.

    It is very different to be told: =93It is all in your brain.=94 and choos= ing a cell from the brain
    so that the protein produced by one of its genes could sen= d signal probably to the pancreas. Only
    brain can send signal to all parts = of the body, so it a good place to modify the different genes
    and expect some re= sults.

    Last week I learn that there are around 300 genes involved in obesity and= some of them involved in
    diabetes as well. Maybe one day, we may find that all=

    sickness has its origin in one or more gene. Who knows? Genetic is a fiel= d that fascinates me.

    Hopefully, at least when people are discussing peer-reviewed research in medical journals, the
    conclusions are supported by the findings of the study (which does make it so, but just in the
    context of that study. Whether any future study is able to confirm the results, and whether
    eventually there's enough evidence to say, 'yes, it looks like we've got reasonable proof of x' is a
    separate question.

    BUT, one study does not a definitive conclusion make.

    So for now, until other studies corroborate these findings, I feel it has to be may, and maybes.

    We still ARE in the dark ages, and it's getting darker. Whjile the pharma companies are making
    millions and millions out of diabetes, they'll (are) less inclined to find a cure.

    Research just menas we're used a guinea pigs. That's why we see so many drugs redalled. The pharma's
    can't wait to get their stuff on the shelves and they don't do sufficient testing. They rely on the
