Are road bike seats really designed with comfort in mind or are manufacturers just trying to make a quick buck by selling overpriced, poorly designed saddles that leave riders numb and sore after a few hours on the road? Ive been riding for years and I still cant figure out why so many road bike seats seem to be designed with the same flaws - too much pressure on the perineum, not enough support for the sit bones, and materials that seem to be chosen for their durability rather than their comfort.
Whats the point of having a super lightweight, aerodynamic bike if the seat is just going to make you miserable after a few miles? And dont even get me started on the so-called anatomical seats that are supposed to be designed to fit the human body but somehow manage to be even more uncomfortable than the standard saddles.
Ive tried a few different seats over the years, but Ive yet to find one that really feels like it was designed with comfort in mind. And Im not just talking about the cheap, entry-level seats - Ive tried some of the high-end saddles from well-known manufacturers and theyre not much better.
So, whats the secret to finding a comfortable road bike seat? Is it just a matter of trial and error, or are there some specific features or design elements that I should be looking for? And why do so many manufacturers seem to be ignoring the comfort issue altogether?
