  14. So Campagnolo EPS battery life - between charges, so long as the system is powered down between rides (an option with Campagnolo but not all of the competition) is approx 1500km. SRAM, around 750km per charge per battery - Shimano, somewhere in the middle.

    Campag needs it's own charger in EPS format (but not in WRL where battery life is similar to e-TAP, it just needs it's own cable), SRAM needs it's own charger, Shimano "wireless" needs it's own cable.

    I've run a fleet of bikes with EPS, as the lead tech for Campagnolo in the UK - we have run 10 or 11 bikes with EPS at any one time, heavily used and abused. We've had almost zero reliability issues - one charger damaged by a user trying to force the charge plug in. That's in hundreds of thousands of user km since 2011.

    In terms of reliability, in my genuine, at the coalface experience, I'd so no different to Shimano Di2, better than SRAM but not much in it. And I see hundreds, if not thousands of bikes at this level every year, as we offer race and event service on sportifs where I might have service teams looking after 4 or 500 bikes over several days and race service where we might have bikes in continuous, race use for 10-14 days.

    Well, this is a shortcoming of any electronic device. What about when your Garmin dips?
    It probably doesn't, because you charge it, probably every two or three rides, the same way as you probably charge your phone every day or two.

    EPS, e-TAP, Di2 the same - my experience is that riders with electronic groups, if anything, over-charge their groupset batteries - optimum for Li-ion cell longevity (and they all use Li-ion) is generally (applies to everything from your laptop, through your phone to your bike lights) is to keep it in the 50-80% of full charge zone ... most users whack them up to 100% every time because of what in electric automotive world, they call "range anxiety".

    To put it into "real world" terms, we charge the demo fleet EPS systems every 2 - 3 days when they are in consistent, multi-day use - so if I'm riding with customers for 3 days, I'll usually charge my own bike's system the day before we roll out and then I know I've got charge good for 600km or so (most of those rides, we're more like 450km over the 3 days, anyway), on the WRL system.

    EPS (as distinct from Wireless (WRL) has real world battery life of around 1500-1800km of average shifting.

    I know because ahead of it being launched commercially, I was one of many Campagnolo test riders asked to do a "proving" ride. I chose (because it was a ride I wanted to do), a "credit card tour" from London to Cannes in 6 days - more or less 300km / day (1st and last days were 160 & 185km respectively). The objective was to see whether the real life of the battery was anything like the projected life. Some of the ride was flat, not many shifts - some of it was mountains - loads of shifts, a lot of them front shifts, approx 1.3x more power consumptive than a rear shift. I got to Cannes with the battery level indicator in the 6-20% range (at that stage it was a 5-step LED, now, it's ANT+ to your cycle computer and rather more exact).

    Of the three widely used electronic system maker's product out there, 11s EPS has the largest number of expected shifts per charge, followed 12s EPS, then (not very far, if at all behind), Shimano 11s Di2, then Shimano 12s Di2, then Campagnolo WRL and SRAM e-Tap at about the same.

    That's real world experience, from working with teams myself, input I've had from team mechanics I've spoken or worked with at the UCI, and from something over 50 multi-day participation rides by "normal cyclists" I have worked as a mechanic on, since 2009.

  18. It's simple - it's horses for courses.

    If you are looking for a "it'll never let me down, no matter what environment I am in" solution, go for a 1 x 5s mechainical system with a freewheel - if you really need gears - then, the chances are, wherever you are in the world, you'll be fine - you'll be able to put a solution together foir almost any failure.

    I've worked in situations like that and a way can generally be found.

    On the other hand, if what you need is fast, accurate shifting that does not "drift" once set up until a certain level of wear and tear occurs (which is parallel with other, fully mechanical systems) then there are some advantages to electronic shifting.

    I may be a technician but in my time, I'm willing to bet quite a lot that I have ridden a good deal more km than most and in a wider variety of circumstances, from tours in the sense of strapping luggage and a tent on a bike and heading off into places where you don't see bike shops at all, to tours in the sense of stage races - and I'd simply use the tool that is appropriate for the job.

    If I'm expedition touring in the Atacama Desert, it's going to be a basically simple mechanical bike because that's what's needed.
    If I'm racing, it's going to be an electronic-shift bike because that's what's best in that use-case.

    Your initial and central premise is flawed or at least, is a set of criticisms that can be levelled at any of the main 3 component makers, who offer electronic groups widely at the moment and will become more so with new entrants into the market - Ltwoo, Sensah, WheelTop and the others queueing up over the horizon ...

    I think you are trolling here - every part on every bicycle is to some extent proprietary and unless you want every bicycle in the world to be identical, it will remain so.

    I'd suggest a little study of the history of cycle mechanics to see the extent to which parts have, over many decades, varied widely in their interchangeability.
