Whats with the obsession over interval training being the only way to improve cardiovascular fitness and increase speed? Its almost as if the cycling community has been brainwashed into thinking that this is the only way to train, and any other method is inferior. Newsflash: its not the only way, and in fact, it can be downright detrimental to your progress if youre not careful.
For those who swear by interval training, can you explain to me why its more effective than, say, steady-state cardio or hill repeats? Dont give me the usual its because of the anaerobic benefits or its because it simulates real-world racing conditions nonsense. I want concrete evidence, backed by science, that interval training is superior to other forms of training.
And while were at it, whats with the arbitrary 20-30 minute interval sessions that everyone seems to be peddling? Where did this number come from, and why is it the holy grail of interval training? Cant we just mix it up a bit and try some longer or shorter intervals, just to keep things interesting?
And lets not forget about the potential risks of overtraining, which seems to be an inevitable consequence of interval training. Are we so focused on getting faster that were willing to sacrifice our overall health and well-being? I didnt think so.
So, interval training zealots, I challenge you: prove to me that your precious interval training is the only way to go, and that its not just a fad thats been perpetuated by the cycling community. Show me the evidence, and explain to me why its superior to other forms of training. Anything less is just empty rhetoric.
