Why do my watts drop towards the end of a long zone 2 ride

Is it worth exploring the possibility that this decline is not solely due to energy depletion, but rather a result of decreased neuromuscular drive and poorly managed energy reserves. Shouldnt the same athlete be able to maintain their power output for an extended duration if they can optimize their energy production and distribution, regardless of the rides length. Or are the current training protocols and pacing strategies flawed in addressing the root cause of this inevitable drop in performance. Do the proponents of periodized training and gradual progression overlook the importance of developing the ability to sustain a high-intensity effort over an extended duration. Is it time to question the conventional wisdom that dictates a decrease in wattage towards the end of a long zone 2 ride, and instead, challenge athletes to push beyond their perceived physiological limitations.
