I've recently joined the SYHA as my walking has taken me further afield. Just as I thought I'd found a bargain basement method of finding accomodation (online booking, cheap etc) most of them have closed for the winter! Some may be booked via Rent-a-hostel if you fancy booking the whole hostel for the night (nooooo....), but with the exception of the bigger hostels that's it until March or April.
Do any here need accomodation during this period, do you stay at private B&Bs, camp or does it affect the choice of location when planning a walk?

Over the last few years the SYHA have, sadly, become increasingly [censored]. OTOH, there's now quite a good set of independent hostels and bunkhouses across the country in remote(ish) spots that are picking up the slack, and then some.

I use a combination of tent hostel and B&B as the fancy takes me.
If you are in Scotland there are a whole load of hostels that stay open in the winter. They are Independent and do what they like!
One advantage of joining the SYHA is that it is cheaper than the YHA, so if you are English or Welsh you can join SYHA and still get access to the YHA hostels at home. -- Phil Cook looking north over the park to the "Westminster Gasworks"

Gits arnt they! Their market is foreign travellers backpacking around Scotland. Until recently you could get into the larger ones and Killin stayed open for weekends. Now we have lost that.
Even Crianlarich is closed at the moment. Unfortunately its a case of a 4 season pit and a good tent... Very pleasant but I miss the social side of the hostels.
The private ones are great, but are often block booked out at weekends.
