Can a rider win the Tour de France without a strong team, or are we just deluding ourselves into thinking a solo act can conquer the toughest test in cycling. It seems every year the narrative is the same - a strong team is the backbone of a successful GC bid, yet when a rider like Tadej Pogačar or Egan Bernal dominates, their teams strength is somehow downplayed.
Are we placing too much emphasis on team strength, and overlooking individual talent and tactics. Whats to say a rider with an average team couldnt use cunning and guile to outmaneuver their better-supported rivals. How much of a role does luck and circumstance play in the outcome of the Tour, and could a rider with a weaker team capitalize on the misfortunes of others.
Is it time to rethink our assumptions about what it takes to win the Tour de France, or are we just romanticizing the idea of a lone wolf taking down the pelotons best.
