Is heart rate or power a more reliable metric for Zone 2, and do the differing opinions on this topic really boil down to roadies vs. mountain bikers? On paper, power seems like the more objective and reliable metric, but how many of us really have access to reliable and affordable power meters? Plus, dont power meters require a level of calibration and maintenance that can be a hassle for those of us who just want to get out and ride?
On the other hand, heart rate is something thats easily measurable with a decent smartwatch or heart rate strap, but isnt it also more prone to variables like fatigue, stress, and even something as simple as a poor nights sleep? Plus, heart rate zones can be pretty subjective - whats Zone 2 for one person might be Zone 3 for another.
Can the roadies out there really say that power is the only way to go, or are they just drinking the Kool-Aid because its what all the pros use? And what about us mountain bikers - are we just stuck in the dark ages if were still using heart rate to gauge our intensity?
It seems to me that the answer to this question really depends on the individual and what works best for their specific riding style and goals. But what do you guys think - is power really the superior metric, or is heart rate still a viable option for those of us who dont have a wallet full of cash or a team of mechanics at our beck and call?
