Ive seen some claims that these metrics are not as accurate as theyre made out to be, and that they may not be sensitive enough to detect changes in fat oxidation. Others argue that invasive measures like muscle biopsies are the only way to truly assess fat adaptation, but this is clearly not practical for most athletes. Can we trust the data from portable devices that claim to measure fat oxidation, and should we be relying more on power output and pace as indirect indicators of fat adaptation?
