Whats the point of even calling yourself a serious night rider if youre not running lights that can actually be seen by oncoming traffic from more than a few feet away? I mean, lets be real, those tiny little blinkies that most people slap on their handlebars are basically just decorations at this point. Theyre not doing anything to actually make you visible to drivers who are staring at their phones while barreling down the highway.
So, what are some gravel bike lights that can actually handle the job of keeping you visible on a pitch-black night ride? Im not talking about lights that are just good enough or get the job done, Im talking about lights that are actually designed with the sole purpose of keeping you alive on roads that are more or less guaranteed to be populated by inattentive and hostile drivers.
Youd think this would be a no-brainer, but apparently its not, judging by the number of people I see riding around at night with lights that might as well be candles in the wind. I mean, come on, folks, if youre going to ride at night, at least have the decency to make yourself visible to the people who are trying to kill you.
And dont even get me started on the whole Visibility vs. Seeability debate. If your light isnt making it clear to oncoming traffic that youre a person on a bike and not just a weirdly-shaped speed bump, then its not doing its job.
So, what are some actual, honest-to-goodness, no-BS gravel bike lights that can handle the demands of night riding in heavy traffic? Lights that can blast through the darkness and make it clear to everyone within a 3-block radius that youre a cyclist who refuses to be ignored?
