Why is it that so many cyclists still dont understand the importance of monitoring heart rate during Zone 2 sessions, and what exactly are the consequences of neglecting this crucial aspect of training?
Isnt it obvious that monitoring heart rate allows you to gauge your bodys response to exercise and ensure youre staying within the optimal zone for endurance training, which is typically between 60-70% of maximum heart rate? And yet, time and time again, I see riders ignoring this basic principle and instead relying on perceived exertion or pace, which can be highly subjective and unreliable.
Whats more, failing to monitor heart rate during Zone 2 sessions can lead to overtraining, decreased performance, and increased risk of injury or burnout. And still, many riders seem to think they can just wing it and hope for the best, without putting in the effort to track their heart rate and adjust their training accordingly.
Can anyone explain to me why this is? Is it a lack of education, a lack of discipline, or simply a lack of understanding of the underlying physiology? And what can be done to educate riders on the importance of heart rate monitoring, and to encourage them to take a more scientific approach to their training?
Furthermore, what are some specific strategies that riders can use to effectively monitor and manage their heart rate during Zone 2 sessions, and how can they incorporate this into their overall training plan? Are there any particular tools or technologies that are particularly effective for this purpose, or is it simply a matter of paying attention to your body and adjusting your training accordingly?
It seems to me that this is a fundamental aspect of endurance training, and yet its something thats often overlooked or neglected. So, Id love to hear from other riders on this topic, and to get a better understanding of why this is, and what we can do to improve our training and performance.
