Why old school training produced legends without structured periodization

Is it really a coincidence that the most iconic cyclists in history were able to dominate their competition without the need for structured periodization, while nowadays it seems like every pro rider is more concerned with their Training Peaks data than actually putting in the hard work, or are we just romanticizing the past and ignoring the fact that the old school guys were just plain lucky to have avoided the pitfalls of overtraining and overanalysis that come with modern training methods.

    Were the likes of Merckx, Hinault and Coppi just genetically gifted freaks of nature who didnt need to worry about things like recovery rides and interval sessions, or were they simply better at listening to their bodies and responding to the physical demands of racing, rather than blindly following some pre-programmed training plan.

    And what about the role of technology in all of this - are we really to believe that the fancy gadgets and gizmos that every pro rider seems to be obsessed with these days are genuinely making a difference in their performance, or are they just a bunch of expensive toys that serve no purpose other than to line the pockets of the companies that make them.

    Its interesting to note that many of the old school riders were also known for their lack of specialization - they would often compete in a wide range of events, from one-day classics to multi-day stage races, and yet they were still able to dominate their competition without the need for the kind of specialized training that is so prevalent today.
