Walking base for Snowdonia.

Llanberis - plenty of choice for accommodation & pretty central for most amenities + reasonable
walking routes.

I'd plump for Beddgelert, which is well placed for the Snowdon massif, Moel Hebog, Cnicht, Nantlle
Ridge and the Nantgwynant valley. There's plenty of varied accommodation available here from hotels
to B&Bs to campsites, as well as a couple of decent pubs in town (the Prince Llewelyn serves
Robinson's real ale - the Snowdon special is top notch). Try and make it to the Cwellyn Arms at Rhyd-
Ddu just a few miles north of Beddgelert, their range of decent beers and food is unrivalled in
North Wales!

Beddgelert, Llanberis and Betws-y-Coed are I think the main 3 options for Northern Snowdonia. All
appear to be geared up for tourists with various accommodation and places to eat. Betws-y-Coed is
further from the high peaks but has more interesting easy low level possibilities such as Swallow
Falls, the Fairy Glen and all the woods around it. Beddgelert is the smallest and probably most
picturesque. (Well it's got a nice narrow bridge anyhow)

Llanberis probably has the biggest choice of accommodation, from camp sites to the YHA youth hostel
through all manner of B&Bs to an expensive posh hotel. Depending on when you want to go however you
may find it gets booked up. You'll also find that nowhere around the National Park is particularly
cheap, so there's not much point comparing place with place from that point of view. One big
advantage of Llanberis is that if you're self-catering there's the option of the outdoors
enthusiast's favourite cafe - Pete's Eats - where there is no such thing as a small meal and no such
thing as a large cost.

Betws-y-Coed was one place I had thought of from just looking on a road map but not having an OS map
of that area and having never been there I had no idea what it was like. I do have the old OS
Outdoor Leisure 17 Map so looking at Beddgelert on that the area looks ok.

Food at The Cwellyn Arms is very expensive, and when I bought a pint there about six weeks ago it
was off - however, they replaced it without question.
