Is the current trend of emphasizing lower body strength in weight training programs for cyclists outdated, and should we be shifting our focus towards developing upper body strength to increase overall force production, particularly in the context of aerodynamic positions and longer events where riders are incentivized to adopt more aggressive, aerodynamic postures that rely heavily on arm and shoulder strength to maintain stability and control?

    Considering the substantial shift towards aerodynamic positions, drop bars, and aggressively shaped bikes, doesnt it make sense that we should be prioritizing exercises that target the muscles that actually play a critical role in maintaining control and stability on these types of bikes? Shouldnt we be focusing on exercises that strengthen the trapezius, rhomboids, and latissimus dorsi muscles, which are responsible for maintaining a stable position and controlling the bike, rather than just focusing on the traditional lower body exercises like squats, lunges, and deadlifts?

    Moreover, wouldnt it be more beneficial to develop a well-rounded strength profile that addresses the unique demands of cycling, rather than simply adopting a generic strength training program thats been adapted from other sports? Doesnt the specific nature of cycling, which involves holding a static position for extended periods while simultaneously generating force, require a more nuanced approach to strength training that takes into account the unique demands of the sport?

    Furthermore, whats the science behind the notion that strengthening the lower body automatically translates to increased force production on the bike? Isnt it possible that the relationship between lower body strength and cycling performance is more complex than were currently acknowledging, and that other factors like flexibility, mobility, and overall muscle balance play a much more significant role in determining a riders overall force production and efficiency on the bike?
