Whats with all the fuss about crank-based power meters being more accurate than pedal-based ones, when in reality theyre just as prone to errors and inconsistencies due to variations in chain wear and bearing friction. And dont even get me started on the supposed inaccuracy of hub-based power meters, which are probably the most reliable and low-maintenance option out there.
I mean, seriously, who actually believes that a tiny sensor stuck to the pedal spindle or crank arm is going to give you a more accurate reading than a full-on power meter integrated into the hub of your wheel. Its just basic physics, people - the closer you are to the actual source of power, the more accurate your readings are going to be. And whats closer to the source of power than the hub of your wheel, where the actual torque is being applied.
And yet, despite all this, I still see people shelling out thousands of dollars for fancy crank-based power meters that are probably just as accurate as a $200 pedal-based one. Its like theyre just drinking the Kool-Aid and believing whatever marketing nonsense the manufacturers are spewing out.
So, lets get real here - whats the actual difference between these different types of power meters, and is it really worth paying an extra $1,000 for a crank-based one. Or are we just getting ripped off by the manufacturers and their fancy marketing campaigns.
