Ive been noticing a lot of differing opinions on the best strategies for cycling in different weather conditions and was hoping to get some discussion going. Specifically, I want to know if the new generation of cyclists is too soft when it comes to inclement weather. Are the Zwift-forged riders of today really prepared to handle the demands of riding in rain, snow, and extreme heat?
It seems like every other ride is being canceled due to a light drizzle or a few degrees of temperature fluctuation. Wheres the grit? Wheres the determination? Are we as a cycling community more concerned with getting our carbon fiber wet than we are with putting in the hard miles?
Whats the point of having a $10,000 bike if youre not willing to ride it in less-than-ideal conditions? Is the average rider more focused on their Strava times than they are on developing the mental toughness needed to push through a tough ride? And dont even get me started on the whole safety argument. Newsflash: the roads are never completely safe.
Im not saying we should be reckless, but come on, folks. A little rain isnt going to kill you. And if youre really that concerned about your bike getting wet, then maybe you shouldnt be riding in the first place.
So, I want to know: whats the best strategy for riding in extreme weather conditions? Is it to tough it out and push through, or is it to err on the side of caution and stay indoors? Do you think the old-school approach of ride no matter what is still relevant today, or are we more concerned with preserving our precious gear and avoiding any perceived danger?
Lets hear it. Whats your take on this? Are you a fair-weather rider, or do you ride no matter what the weather throws at you?
