Whats the point of all these elaborate discussions about cycling in the rain when it seems like nobody actually knows what theyre talking about? Every time it rains, the same old tips and tricks get trotted out, but do they actually make a difference? Fenders, waterproof jackets, and stay relaxed are all just cliches at this point. I mean, how many of you have actually crashed in the rain because you were too busy worrying about getting wet to pay attention to the road?
And dont even get me started on the slow down crowd. Newsflash: if youre going to ride in the rain, youd better be prepared to adapt to changing conditions, not just crawl along at a snails pace and hope for the best. Im not saying its a good idea to ride like a maniac in the rain, but come on, a little bit of rain isnt going to kill you.
So heres the question: whats the one thing youd recommend to someone whos actually serious about riding in the rain, not just commuting to work or doing some Sunday afternoon joyride? Is it a specific type of tire? A particular kind of brake pad? A certain way of handling your bike? Or is it all just a bunch of hooey, and the only thing that really matters is your own personal skill level and experience?
And please, spare me the its all about the bike nonsense. Ive seen people on $10,000 carbon fiber road bikes wipe out in the rain just as easily as someone on a $500 hybrid. Its not about the bike, its about the rider. So whats the secret to riding in the rain like a pro?
