How do I replace a broken stem on my mountain bike?

  1. How do I replace a broken stem on my mountain bike, and why do so many of you seem to think its rocket science, yet Ive seen some of you manage to upgrade your derailleurs with ease and precision? I mean, Ive read countless threads of people talking about the intricacies of proper stem removal, and yet, every time I try to do it myself, I end up stripping the threads, or worse, rounding the bolts.

    Ive watched numerous YouTube tutorials, and read through the manual (yes, I still have the manual), but somehow, I still manage to mess it up. Ive even attempted to use a hair dryer to loosen the adhesive (dont ask), and lets just say that was a terrible idea.

    Can someone, for the love of all things two-wheeled, please provide a step-by-step guide on how to replace a broken stem without needing a PhD in mechanical engineering, or at the very least, a healthy dose of patience and some functioning neurons?

    And before you all start telling me to just take it to the shop, let me remind you that Im a DIY kind of person, and Id rather not shell out $50 to have someone do something I can (theoretically) do myself.
