How does power training improve endurance for long-distance cycling events?

Whats the point of power training if its just going to turn endurance cyclists into a bunch of sprinters who cant even make it past 50 miles without blowing up, and yet everyone on this forum is still obsessed with chasing those short-term power gains, meanwhile completely neglecting the actual endurance aspect of long-distance cycling events.
