Is it possible that the traditional core strengthening exercises commonly recommended for cyclists, such as planks and crunches, may actually be doing more harm than good in terms of maintaining optimal cycling posture and endurance?
Some would argue that these exercises primarily target the rectus abdominis and may lead to an imbalance in core strength, potentially causing cyclists to over-engage their lower back muscles and adopt a more rigid posture on the bike.
On the other hand, alternative exercises such as side planks, bird dogs, and rotational movements may be more effective in targeting the transverse abdominis and other stabilizer muscles, allowing for a more efficient transfer of power and reduced fatigue on long rides.
How do others feel about this? Are traditional core exercises still the best way to go for cyclists, or are there better alternatives that can provide a more functional and sustainable source of core strength?
Are there any studies or research that support one approach over the other? What exercises have you found to be most beneficial in terms of improving your cycling posture and endurance?
