Ive noticed some of you triathletes and open water enthusiasts still insist on wearing those restrictive, buoyant wetsuits, while others swear by the more streamlined, flexible ones. Can someone explain to me why theres such a huge discrepancy in wetsuit design and features, and how one is supposed to choose the right one for their needs?
Is it really just a matter of personal preference, or are there specific characteristics that make one wetsuit better suited for certain types of swimming or water conditions? Ive seen some wetsuits with built-in sleeves, while others are sleeveless, and some have weird-looking panels and seams. Whats the purpose of all these different features, and how do they affect the overall performance of the wetsuit?
Ive also heard some people say that a wetsuit thats too flexible can actually hinder your swimming performance, while others claim that a more rigid wetsuit can provide better support and stability. Can someone clarify this for me, and explain how to determine what level of flexibility is right for your needs?
And whats with the huge price range for wetsuits? Ive seen some entry-level models for a few hundred bucks, while the high-end ones can cost upwards of $2,000. Is there really that much of a difference in quality and performance, or is it just a matter of marketing and branding?
Im not looking for a specific recommendation or endorsement, I just want to understand the basics of wetsuit design and selection, and how to make an informed decision when choosing one.
