It seems to me that the entire concept of recovery is just a myth perpetuated by the cycling industry to sell more foam rollers and protein powder. I mean, think about it - our ancestors used to ride their bikes for hours a day without all the fancy recovery techniques and they seemed to do just fine.

    Whats the actual scientific evidence that supports the idea that recovery is necessary for improving cycling performance? Is it just a case of correlation does not imply causation, where people who are already fit and healthy happen to also be doing recovery work? Or is there actually some concrete proof that foam rolling and stretching and eating protein shakes actually makes you faster on the bike?

    And another thing, what even constitutes recovery anyway? Is it just a subjective feeling of not being tired, or is there some objective measure of it? Can we quantify recovery in some way, or is it just a bunch of anecdotal nonsense?
