Im still blown away by the sheer number of amateur hour builds Ive seen on this platform, especially when it comes to the Salsa Journeyman Apex 1. Its like people think slapping a set of wheels and a saddle on a frame constitutes a custom build. Newsflash: it doesnt.
So, heres a question for all you self-proclaimed custom builders out there: whats the most creative way youve managed to ruin a perfectly good Journeyman Apex 1 frame with a subpar component spec? Im talking mismatched cranksets, bottom brackets that dont belong, and wheelsets that are so wrong theyd make a decent mechanic cry.
I mean, seriously, who thought it was a good idea to pair a SRAM Apex 1 groupset with a set of Shimano wheels and a crankset from a completely different manufacturer? Or, better yet, who decided that a Journeyman Apex 1 deserved a set of entry-level hydraulic disc brakes that are only marginally better than the rim brakes they replaced?
Im not asking for opinions or recommendations here; I just want to see what kind of trainwrecks youve managed to create in the name of customization. And, please, spare me the justifications and excuses – I just want to see the specs and a brief description of your, ahem, masterpiece.
Oh, and one more thing: if your build features a saddle with a built-in gel insert or a set of clipless pedals with a platform, dont bother responding – I already know you have no idea what youre doing.
