Whats with all the hype around Gore-Tex and eVent rain jackets for cycling? Are they really worth the hefty price tag, or are they just a bunch of marketing nonsense? I mean, Ive seen guys rocking the 7Mesh Oro jacket, and yeah, it looks pretty sweet, but does it actually keep you dry in a torrential downpour? And what about the Pearl Izumi Pursuit jacket? Ive heard mixed reviews about its waterproofing, but some guys swear by it.
Im not buying the whole breathability thing, either. If its pouring rain, I dont care if my jacket is breathable or not - I just want to stay dry. And dont even get me started on the whole water-repellent treatment thing. How long does that stuff really last, anyway?
Ive been using a cheap, no-name rain jacket for years, and its done the job just fine. Sure, its not the most stylish thing in the world, but who cares? Im not out there trying to win a fashion contest - Im just trying to stay dry and ride my bike.
So, whats the real deal? Are the high-end rain jackets worth the money, or can you get away with something cheaper? And whats the best way to keep your jacket waterproof, anyway? Is it worth re-treating it every few months, or is that just a waste of time and money?
