Are we really still debating the merits of MTB pants versus shorts? It seems like every time this topic comes up, the same tired arguments are trotted out: pants are warmer, shorts are cooler, pants offer more protection, shorts are more breathable. But what about the real question: are pants or shorts actually better for mountain biking?
Im calling foul on the conventional wisdom that says pants are the way to go for colder or more technical rides. Have you ever tried to pedal in a pair of soggy, heavy pants? Its like trying to ride a bike with a pair of wet diapers wrapped around your legs. And dont even get me started on the chafing.
On the other hand, shorts are often maligned as being too cold or too vulnerable to scratches and scrapes. But what about the benefits of increased mobility and flexibility? And with the right pair of knee pads, arent shorts just as protected as pants?
So heres the question: are pants or shorts really better for mountain biking, or is it all just a matter of personal preference? And more importantly, whats the deal with all the baggy, pleated monstrosities that are masquerading as MTB pants these days? Cant we just have a simple, streamlined design that doesnt make us look like were trying out for a role in a bad 90s action movie?
Lets settle this debate once and for all: pants or shorts, which is the superior choice for mountain biking?
