Back in the 'fifties and 'sixties, Captain K. and Mr. Greenjeans would do their own product pitching
of Schwinn bikes out in the courtyard of the Treasure House, and the "slightly higher" bit was the
usual end of their presentation back then.

p.s. Am I the the only person that remembers the Schwinn pedal-powered wagon with the
removable flatbed?

Schwinn ads featured retail prices that represented what dealers in the Midwest sold them for, but
the increased costs of shipping made them a bit higher elsewhere. So their ads always had that line
in small print at the bottom. Typically about a $5 difference if I recall correctly; I believe my
first Schwinn Varsity was advertised at $72.99 but in Northern California they were $77.99.

That phrase was on the Schwinn price list at one time, in the era of "fair trade" which is a
euphemism for "price fixing".

Sort of. It "fixed" pricing in both directions, at a margin that was so low it was nearly impossible
to stay in business. If you didn't pre-order Schwinns by the container, and brought in bikes from
the west coast warehouse, that $76 retail Varsity could cost you (the dealer) as much as $67. $9 to
pay for assembly, floor space, salespeople...

By requiring dealers to buy in *huge* quantities and tie up gobs of working capital, Schwinn could
virtually guarantee that a dealer couldn't bring in a competing line.
