I've ridden a C-dale with a suspension seatpost. For 99% of the riding I do in SoCal, it was plenty.
I have a Dean steel HT frame without the suspension seatpost and can keep up with the guys on FS
bikes. I get bounced a little more, but I don't have to haul that extra mass around.

For my next frame, I am probably going to try either the Epic or the Stumpjumper 4-bar linkage FS. I
gotta see if it IS actually better, or are people justifying spending the money...

Heck, I've been night riding mtn style on my cross bike. 34c tires, NO suspension. I'm about 90% as
fast as if I was riding my mtn bike, so it CAN be done rigid.

Personally, after having ridden a couple of other folks' rear suspension bikes, I'm planning to
stick with my hardtails for the riding that I do. On the majority of off-roading, I'm out of the
saddle more often than not, like an oversized BMXer.

There's plenty of knowledgeable people on alt.mountain-bike Personally I ride FS. Mainly because I
want the comfort of staying in the saddle and the ability to take small drops easier. I can lock out
the suspension both back and front when I feel like it, thus giving me a hardtail or even rigid.
Since I'm not a racer it's more a matter of how much I wanna spend. And I prefer spending money on
bikes instead of hookers 😉

I second Perre opinion. I personally am thinking about getting a Giant NRS Air frame and having it
built up for XC trail riding and credit card style touring using a Carradice saddle bag. The FS is
really smooth.

I have ridden massive trail miles on all kinds of mtbs and can honestly say I prefer a fully rigid
steel bike. The rigid bike provides plenty of suspension anyway, mostly in the 2.1 or 2.3 tires, but
also in the cro-moly fork and the handlebars. Thin cro-mo is wondrous stuff. Of course this
preference has much to do with the style of the trails around here on the Pikes Peak massif--
generally smooth, gravelly, tight turns, lots of big hills. There are trail sections when I wish I
had suspension but there are more instances of wishing for no shocks when I'm on a suspension bike.

Sometimes I wish I had a very stiff rear spring and a rigid front fork. That's my confession
for the day.
