When I worked in a shop, replacing bearings was required on every overhaul. It cost less to replace
bearings than to clean & inspect. Even now, replacing ball bearings is cheap insurance.

Not everyone keeps a bag of each size in their tool chest. (I do, but that's me.) For those who
don't, they may have encountered such things as an lbs that charges 80 cents per ball for 3/16"
bearings, as is the case at the one nearest my house. This makes the prospect of changing them
without inspection much less attractive. (It also is the reason why I now have the aforementioned
bags of bearings in the tool chest; for the price of one bike's worth of bearings at said lbs, I
bought enough for the whole fleet from a more economical supplier.)

80 cents PER BALL??? Outrageous! Extortion! My last set was $1 *per race* for 5/32" headset
bearings. $2 for that and an extra set- the tops were in retainers and in perfect shape.

That was my reaction as well, but it was a Saturday afternoon, I needed the bike in service for that
evening for a ride I'd promised the daughter we'd make, and I wasn't sure that I'd have time to get
to the next nearest before they closed. I'm about done with going to that place, though; they also
wanted to nick me for $10 for a plain-jane Greenlee kickstand that's no more than $7 anywhere else.
I think they've got a serious case of patisserie pricing in a diner market.
